“Yeah, went down fine, Rand. It was exactly where you said the package would be.” Jackson swallowed bile remembering what he had done. He winced as he leaned against the hard chair, coming into contact with the freshly inked flesh.

“I took another one for the team,” he joked.

“Yeah?”

“Got a tattoo last night that covers my back. Dragon fighting a knight with his sword raised in valor.”

“Really? Sounds like a Los Knights tattoo. What the hell!”

“There is no gang name attached. Calm down. It’s only a tattoo. She did a great job.”

“Did she sterilize? Fuck, Jackson, you could get hepatitis or even worse.”

He sighed aloud. “Of course, they’re not heathens.”

“Yeah, well, remember who you’re dealing with.”

The unnecessary prejudice riled him. He was half-Mexican now. Then he realized Rand didn’t know. What would he think? It was vastly different from being teased for his deep tan to being of a different race than was checked off on his birth certificate. The situation had shifted the very ground under his feet.

“Are you on your iPad?”

“Yeah.”

“Check out this latest communique. I’m forwarding it right now.”

“Okay.” Jackson clicked on his encrypted web mail account, signed in. “The one from Johnson?”

“Yeah, he’s not too happy about developments. The last shipment was a few grams of cocaine in a very stinky can. We let customs have the honor of searching it and he was assigned.”

He could hear the grin. “Just a test. He’s careful.”

“Well, something spectacular better happen soon or we all may get pulled off the case. Less than a kilo does not a drug cartel arrest make. Fucking pathetic.”

“It’ll happen. Tell them to be patient. And you got me at this end watching things.”

“I hope we don’t have to go through another scenario like last night. That was nip and tuck. The guy had been dead for hours. If they had checked too closely, they would have seen that. We’d be up shit creek.”

“You mean I’d be up shit creek.”

“I haven’t forgotten who’s taken the most risks. In fact, wasn’t I the one who said—don’t do it?”

“Yeah. It’s all on me.”

“Besides, before I’d criticize a man, I’d want to walk a mile in his shoes. That way, I’m a mile away and I got his shoes!” As Jackson chuckled, Rand added, “I gotta go. Incoming from Catherine.”

“Catherine! What the hell does she want?”

“Been sniffing around again. I can’t seem to lose the bitch.”

The words were out of character. “Want to tell me about it?”

“No. When you get back. Any idea when that will be?”

“Soon as I know when he’s headed back. I want to be there for the big one. Probably in a few days.” But did he? He realized he was experiencing some reluctance at watching the bust that would destroy Hector now that he was getting to know him better. But then he thought of Elena.

“Stay in touch, okay?”

“Sure.” Jackson hung up and stared at the screen looking at his new screensaver of a photo he’d found of Elena on the internet. She was heartbreakingly beautiful.
